An announced measure is not a result: what to check in military service
One court case established a specific failure in weapons handling; the investigation into the Caspian tragedy is still under way. These are separate cases, but both raise a practical question: what would show that a decision led to change?
Caspian tragedy: what is known about the deaths of 14 service members
The final search count is 14 dead and three rescued. A commission is reviewing the Defence Ministry, a new minister has been appointed and all 17 service members swept into the sea have been awarded. The criminal investigation continues; no court has determined individual guilt.
Alibek Kalbay: four days in the army, a nine-year sentence
The 18-year-old conscript died in April 2022. A fellow soldier was sentenced to nine years, while the family also sought accountability from commanders.
